The Learning Support Zone       @Ħandaq Senior School

WHO WE ARE?

The LSZ is made up of a Learning Support Teacher (Ms. Rachel St John) and a Learning Support Educator (Ms. Tiziana Gauci). The team works hand in hand with other teachers and LSEs, Guidance Team and the Psycho-Social Team, School Support Services and Centres, Prefect of Discipline, the School’s SMT and the Behaviour Support Team.

AIMS AND PURPOSE

Through various interesting activities in a 8-10 week programme, the LSZ aims to help and support students who experience social, emotional or behavioural difficulties in a holistic way. The Learning Zone is also open during breaks where students from the whole school have the opportunity to practice social skills while being supervised.

PART OF THE SCHOOL

The LSZ forms an integral part of the Secondary School and it embraces the school rules, policies and ethos. The LSZ is based in a special room dedicated to group sessions and to individual one to one sessions.  It is found on Level -1, next to the Tuck Shop.

HOW IT WORKS

1. The LSZ follows students who have been referred by school staff through the School Administration. It involves observation, assessment and target setting through an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and Individual Behaviour Plan (IBP) in some cases.

2. The LSZ is committed to helping students cope better with their daily challenges. It should not be treated as a form of punishment, a means of segregation, a means of skiving lessons, or a quick route to exclusion.

3. The LSZ prepares programmes for students covering the following topics: Conflict Resolution, Anger Management, Friendships, Relationship skills, Indipendent Living Skills, Emotional Literacy, Circle Time, Anti-Bullying Programmes and more

4. This year we have introduced Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) workshops to a group of teachers and LSEs. This is a whole school approach to discuss ways how to help and support students better in a collaborative way and to include SEL in our normal everyday life in our school community.
